The Vineyard

Winemaking is an art, a process that takes huge investments of time. We have a specific process that we follow year in and year out to ensure our wines come out as fine as possible. Every season has its role in the winemaking process that improves the quality of our wines.

Below we highlight some of the key aspects of making wine here at Champoeg Wine Cellars. Also included are seasonal photos to give you a glimpse at how our vineyard operates.

Springtime marks the budding out of the vines as we begin our vineyard management program. We also bottle any wines that have finished their fermantation process.

Our vineyard management program continues through the summer as we watch our vineyard "canopy" develop. This includes leaf-pulling to expose the fruit, thinning the fruit, and hedging the vines. This is all done by hand.

Autumn is our harvest time. We hand pick the ripened grapes before taking them to the wine press where they are crushed. The fruit ferments in tanks and bins depending on the variety. Later in the fall we move certain wines to barrels.

In the winter the wine is still fermenting in tanks and barrels. We prune our entire vineyard to two canes by hand.
